Welcome to the Modesto City Schools Library Resources Website
Modesto City Schools was one of fifty-nine school districts across the
United States awarded a Improving Literacy Through School Libraries grant
for the 2008-2009 school year.
This grant provides $506,048 to assist Modesto City Schools in meeting the
reading and literacy challenges of our students. The grant will fund:
• Updates to the library collection, particularly in the areas
of science, reference, easy fiction and fiction and increase the
book to student ratio.
• Updated technology resources by purchasing laptop computers, LCD
projectors, and student computers for those sites that did not have
adequate access to these items.
• Provided the online magazine database SIRS Discoverer and Scholastic BookFlix
for student, teacher and parent use. Purchased Destiny Media Manager
to facilitate circulation of curriculum items cataloged at Library Services
• Provided staff development for K-6 Library Media Teachers and Library
Assistants in developing standards-based lessons and Information
Literacy activities that reinforce educational standards.
The Improving Literacy Through School Libraries initiative believes that
school libraries, Library Media Teachers and Library Assistants play a
critical role in the academic achievement of students. This grant
assisted Modesto City Schools in meeting the District’s Strategic Plan
goal of closing the achievement gap of our English Language Learners.
